Why choose pavers?

Individual paving units make it possible to build a patterned surface and, where the system permits, lift and reinstate a local area for repairs. The surface is only one part of the pavement. Performance also depends on suitable bedding, base, drainage and restraint.

Choose units suitable for the intended pedestrian or vehicle use. A patio quantity estimate cannot confirm a driveway structure. CMHA’s construction guidance treats paving as a layered system rather than simply a number of blocks placed on the ground.

Pavers, bedding and joints are different materials

Pavers provide the wearing surface. Bedding supports and seats the units. Joint material fills the spaces between them. The structural base below has a separate purpose again. Specify each material according to the selected pavement system rather than ordering every layer as generic sand or gravel.

Bedding-sand selection is particularly important in vehicle applications. The grading and durability requirements are not established by the calculator. Permeable paving can use a different aggregate assembly; do not copy a conventional sand-set detail into a permeable project without checking its specification.

Measure the finished paved area

For a rectangle, multiply length by width. For a circle, use π × radius². Split an irregular patio into simpler non-overlapping areas or enter an already measured area. Keep border courses and separately colored areas identifiable so their quantities can be ordered independently.

Measure the chosen unit or use its stated coverage information. The calculator models a repeated rectangular unit. Mixed-size packs, curved pieces and complex repeating patterns need the manufacturer’s pack coverage or a layout takeoff, not an average of unrelated unit dimensions.

Count modules, then allow for cuts

With a joint entered, the estimated repeating module is (paver length + joint width) × (paver width + joint width). Dividing area by this module gives an approximate count before cutting allowance. With no joint entered, only the face dimensions are used.

The waste percentage increases that count once, then the result rounds upward to whole units. This is an area-based estimate, not a row-by-row layout or a guarantee that every offcut can be reused. A diagonal layout, borders or narrow strips can need a different allowance from a simple rectangle.

Order the surface and base separately

The optional base and sand volumes are paved area multiplied by the depths you enter. The paver cutting allowance does not automatically increase those layer volumes. The tool does not add compaction, edge overbuild or joint-filling sand to the bedding estimate.

Ask the supplier how units are sold: individually, by layer, pack or pallet. The current paver calculator gives whole units, not pallet rounding. Its optional cost is units multiplied by price per paver; base, bedding, joint material, edge restraint, equipment, transport and labor need separate quotes.

Do not use bedding to hide a poor base

Check levels, drainage and the specified support layers before counting the final order as ready for installation. Increasing a sand quantity is not a design fix for weak ground or an unsuitable base. Confirm construction details with the installer and the product guidance.

Keep a copy of the unit dimensions, pattern, allowance and quoted pack contents. If the supplier changes the product, rerun the estimate. A similar-looking paver can have different dimensions and coverage, which changes both count and cost.

Worked example: a rectangular patio

20 ft × 15 ft, 6 × 9 inch units, zero entered joint and 5% cutting allowance. Optional layer depths here are illustrative, not recommended construction details.

300 ÷ 0.375 = 800; 800 × 1.05 = 840. Base and bedding are calculated independently from area and depth. Neither layer receives the 5% cutting allowance.

Questions before you start

Does the sand result include sand for the joints?

No. It represents a continuous bedding layer at the entered depth. Joint material depends on unit geometry, joint dimensions and product coverage; calculate or obtain that separately.

Can I use this for mixed-size paver packs?

The unit-count model uses one rectangular size. For a mixed pack, use verified manufacturer coverage and a separate pack calculation or a supplier takeoff.

Does 5% waste suit every pattern?

No. It is an example allowance. Cuts, pattern, breakage and desired spare stock can change your needs. Review the layout before choosing an allowance.

Is the base depth a construction recommendation?

No. The calculator only multiplies the depth you supply by the paved area. Traffic, ground conditions, drainage and the chosen system determine the required base.
