Why use concrete?

Concrete forms a continuous, durable mass that can be shaped while fresh. It is used for pads, paths, columns and many structural elements, but a quantity estimate alone cannot establish whether a particular mix or thickness is suitable. Start with the project requirements, then calculate how much material those requirements describe.

Cement is the binder, not another name for the whole mixture. Concrete combines cement, water and aggregates. Buying a bag of cement is therefore not equivalent to buying a bag of premixed concrete. Strength and durability depend on mix design and curing as well as the amount placed.

Choose the product before comparing quantities

Bagged concrete is useful when you want to mix manageable batches. Ready-mix arrives already mixed and makes the delivery schedule part of your project plan. Neither option is automatically cheaper: compare the complete quantities and services you actually need.

Check the specified strength, exposure requirements, working time and finishing instructions with your supplier or project professional. A calculator does not design reinforcement, foundations or joints, and it cannot tell you when a slab is safe to load. Keep the product instructions and the project specification with your estimate.

Measure the space concrete will occupy

For a rectangular slab, measure the inside length and width of the forms and the intended concrete thickness. Convert all three dimensions to the same unit before multiplying. If thickness varies, divide the project into sections instead of assuming the deepest point applies everywhere.

For circular pads and columns, use the diameter to find the radius. Volume is π × radius² × thickness for a pad, or π × radius² × height for a column. The calculator also estimates cylindrical holes. Its hole mode represents the full cylinder; it does not automatically subtract an embedded post.

  • Measure concrete thickness, not the combined depth of concrete and its base.
  • Use quantity only for identical sections.
  • Record irregular or thickened sections separately so they are not overlooked.

From dimensions to an order

For feet and inches, slab volume in cubic yards is length in feet × width in feet × thickness in inches ÷ 324. The divisor converts inches to feet and cubic feet to cubic yards. In metric, multiply dimensions expressed in meters to obtain cubic meters.

DailyUseCalc applies your allowance once, then rounds its suggested bulk order upward to the next 0.1 cubic yard. Bag counts use the allowance-adjusted volume divided by the selected bag yield, rounded upward to whole bags. They are not calculated from the separately rounded bulk order. These purchasing rules are not structural safety factors.

Compare bags and ready-mix fairly

Use mixed yield from the product label, not dry bag weight, to calculate bag quantities. The calculator provides presets and a custom yield field. QUIKRETE’s estimating information emphasizes that yields are approximate and that waste or uneven ground must be considered separately.

The ready-mix cost uses the suggested order and the delivery fee you enter. Bag cost uses whole bags and the entered price per bag. Ask whether a quote also includes minimum-load charges, waiting time, pumping, access restrictions and tax; those items are not automatically included. Verify the supplier’s actual minimum order and delivery increment before paying.

Avoid a correct number for the wrong pour

Recheck the dimensions after forms and the base are prepared. A small thickness difference across a large slab changes the volume substantially. Keep the allowance visible, rather than adding several unexplained margins to the same estimate.

Have people, equipment and an appropriate curing plan ready before delivery. Follow the product’s mixing, handling and safety instructions. The article’s example is a quantity demonstration, not a recommendation for slab thickness, concrete strength or loading.

73.333… ÷ 0.60 = 122.222… bags, so purchase rounding gives 123. Keep full precision until the final rounding step. The 2.8 yd³ bulk suggestion is a separate purchasing route.

Questions before you start

How many 80 lb bags make a cubic yard?

If the specific bag yields 0.60 ft³, divide 27 by 0.60: 45 bags make one cubic yard before allowance. An 80 lb label alone does not guarantee that yield; check the product data.

Does the calculator choose the right concrete strength?

No. It estimates volume, bags, approximate weight and entered costs. The mix specification must come from the project requirements and supplier or qualified professional.

Why is the bulk order larger than the calculated volume?

The allowance is added first, followed by upward rounding to the next 0.1 yd³. Both steps are shown so you can distinguish planned extra material from purchasing increments.

Can I estimate several differently sized pads?

Calculate each size separately and combine their unrounded quantities before deciding the final order. The quantity field repeats identical dimensions; it does not describe several different pads.
