choose the right material, then measure

Understand why play sand, bedding sand and joint sand are not interchangeable, then convert your project measurements into volume, weight and bags.

Why use sand?

Sand is a granular material used in very different settings, from children’s sandboxes to specified construction layers. Its usefulness depends on particle properties and the application. A volume calculation tells you how much space a material fills, not whether that material is appropriate for the job.

Start with the intended use and the product information. For example, QUIKRETE identifies its play sand as a specially graded, washed and screened product for sandboxes. That is not a reason to substitute it for a paving system’s specified bedding or joint material.

Read beyond the word “sand”

For paving, bedding sand supports the units while joint material occupies their narrow gaps. The demands are different. CMHA publishes separate bedding-selection guidance because the material’s properties affect pavement performance. Follow the chosen system rather than buying whichever bag happens to be cheapest.

Commercial sand also comes in different grades for particular construction or industrial uses. Product names and color do not supply enough information to approve a substitution. Ask for the intended application, grading, relevant product data and any handling instructions before comparing prices.

Measure the layer, not the whole excavation

For a rectangular layer, area is length × width and volume is area × depth. Use meters throughout for cubic meters, or convert depth in inches to feet before calculating cubic feet. Divide cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards.

DailyUseCalc accepts a known area or several geometric shapes, including circles and rings. Quantity repeats identical areas. For varying depths or irregular spaces, calculate non-overlapping sections separately. A paver project should use only the bedding layer here, not the combined excavation depth or joint voids.

  • Confirm whether your dimensions describe loose material or the intended finished layer.
  • Record exclusions and separate depths before ordering.
  • Use the same units for the supplier’s price, density and package size.

Understand allowance, compaction and weight

The sand calculator adds allowance and compaction percentages independently to the base volume. For a 10 ft³ base with 10% allowance and 5% compaction, the result is 11.5 ft³, not 11.55 ft³. These are user-entered planning additions, not a soil-specific compaction model.

Weight equals volume multiplied by density. Without supplier density, the tool uses an explicitly estimated 2,700 lb per cubic yard. Moisture and material differences mean that value is not a guaranteed delivery weight. Replace it with suitable supplier information when buying by weight or comparing a weight-based quote.

Compare a bag quote with a bulk quote

Bags can be entered by volume or weight. Volume-based bags are divided into the required volume; weight-based bags use the estimated required weight. Both round upward to whole bags. A bulk order uses the selected volume or weight unit and an optional purchasing increment.

Keep the density assumption visible when switching between those bases. A US short ton is 2,000 lb; a metric tonne is 1,000 kg. Confirm which is on the quote. The calculator’s material prices do not automatically include delivery, spreading, machinery or tax, so add those to your comparison outside the estimate.

Avoid applying the same margin twice

If a supplier’s quoted volume already includes the extra loose material needed for the specified layer, do not add another compaction percentage without checking. Similarly, do not add a general allowance both to your hand-measured volume and again in the calculator.

An exact bag count based on an estimated density is still an estimate. For a sandbox product sold by weight, check its stated coverage or ask the supplier for a suitable bulk density. Keep receipts and product identification so an additional order is the same material.

Worked example: a small rectangular layer

6 ft × 4 ft × 4 in, no allowance or compaction, 0.5 ft³ bags. Weight uses the calculator’s estimated 2,700 lb/yd³, not a product guarantee.

24 × (4 ÷ 12) = 8 ft³. Dividing by 0.5 gives 16 bags. The separate weight estimate is (8 ÷ 27) × 2,700 = 800 lb; do not treat that as the measured weight of these particular bags.

Questions before you start

How many bags of sand make a cubic yard?

For bags marked 0.5 ft³, 27 ÷ 0.5 = 54 bags before allowance. A weight-only bag needs a suitable density or manufacturer coverage figure before it can be converted to volume.

Can I use play sand beneath pavers?

Do not assume it is a suitable substitute. Use the bedding material specified for your paving system; play sand is identified for a different use.

Why does changing density change bags but not area?

Density connects volume to weight. It changes weight-based purchasing quantities, but it does not change the geometric area or volume of your project.

Does this calculate polymeric joint sand?

It estimates a continuous layer. Joint-sand needs depend on the gaps, unit thickness and product coverage. Use the joint-product guidance for that separate purchase.
