Project, measurement, and surface shapes
Project supplies guidance only. In Dimensions mode, Surface shape describes the area being tiled: rectangle, square, circle, triangle, trapezoid, or ring. Known Area bypasses surface geometry. Quantity multiplies identical tiled areas.
Surface and tile units
Use Imperial or Metric surface units. Tile dimensions are required and may be entered in inches or feet, or millimeters or centimeters. Presets only fill editable tile-size fields.
Grout gap and installed module
The installed module is tile length plus gap by tile width plus gap. This estimates spacing only; exact tile placement, edge cuts, starting position, pattern orientation, and offcut reuse are not simulated.
Pattern and waste
Pattern affects guidance only and never changes waste secretly. Waste applies to the raw tile estimate before one final whole-tile rounding.
Excluded and irregular areas
Subtract one combined excluded area for doors, windows, cabinets, or fixtures. Split irregular projects into simple shapes and calculate them separately.
Boxes and manufacturer coverage
Enter tiles per box or the manufacturer coverage printed on packaging. Manufacturer coverage overrides calculated box coverage for purchasing; tile dimensions still determine estimated tile count.
Purchased quantity and leftover
Boxes always round upward. Tiles-per-box mode shows purchased and extra tiles. Manufacturer mode shows purchased and extra coverage.
Pricing and cost
Price per tile uses required tiles; price per box uses boxes; area pricing uses waste-adjusted coverage. No exchange-rate conversion occurs. Costs exclude labor and other installation materials.
Worked examples
Imperial: 10 ft x 12 ft with 12 x 12 in tile and 10% waste requires 132 tiles. Metric: 5 m x 4 m with 500 x 500 mm tile and 10% waste requires 88 tiles.

This calculator estimates material quantity and purchasing needs. It does not simulate exact tile placement, edge cuts, starting position, pattern orientation, or offcut reuse.
Tile calculator questions
How many tiles do I need?
Enter the tiled area and tile dimensions. The calculator divides net tiled area by the installed tile module, applies your selected waste once, and rounds the final requirement up to a whole tile.
How much extra tile should I buy?
Straight layouts often use 5–10%; diagonal layouts commonly use 10–15%; herringbone may need 15–20% or more. You control the waste percentage based on cuts, pattern, breakage, and future repairs.
How do I calculate boxes of tile?
Enter tiles per box, or select manufacturer coverage and enter the coverage printed on the package. The resulting box count always rounds upward.
Should I use manufacturer box coverage?
Yes when packaging provides it. Manufacturer coverage overrides calculated box coverage for purchasing, while tile dimensions remain the basis for estimated tile count.
Does grout spacing affect tile count?
The grout gap is added to tile length and width to form an installed module estimate. Exact placement, edge cuts, and layout are not simulated.
How much waste should I add for diagonal tile?
A 10–15% planning range is common, but room geometry, tile size, cuts, and layout can require more or less.
How much waste should I add for herringbone?
Herringbone frequently needs 15–20% or more because of its cutting complexity. Confirm the plan with your installer or supplier.
How do I subtract doors or windows?
Enter their combined area under Excluded area. The excluded amount must be smaller than the gross project area.
Can I calculate tile from known square footage?
Yes. Choose Known Area and enter square inches, square feet, square yards, square centimeters, or square meters.
Does the calculator include grout or thinset?
No. It estimates tile quantity, boxes, and optional tile material cost only. Grout, thinset, underlayment, labor, and other installation materials are excluded.
