diameter, speed and fitment checks

Learn how tire codes translate into nominal dimensions, how replacement sizes affect speed and clearance, and why diameter alone cannot confirm fitment.

Separate nominal geometry from fitment

A tire-size calculator can compare nominal width, sidewall, diameter and circumference. It cannot see the vehicle suspension, fenders, brakes or wheel offset.

Treat the diameter assessment as one planning measurement rather than a safety approval. Similar diameter does not prove that the tire and wheel combination fits or meets the vehicle requirements.

Read the 3 size values

In 225/45R17, 225 is nominal section width in millimetres, 45 is sidewall height as a percentage of width, and 17 is wheel diameter in inches.

The P or LT prefix describes a service category. It does not alter the basic nominal geometry formula, but construction and capacity requirements still differ.

Load index and speed symbol are separate specifications and must be verified against the vehicle and tire manufacturer information.

Calculate diameter and circumference

Sidewall height equals width multiplied by the aspect ratio. Overall diameter equals the wheel diameter converted to millimetres plus 2 sidewalls.

Circumference is pi multiplied by diameter. The result is nominal because mounted and loaded tire measurements vary by tire model, rim width, pressure, load, tread and wear.

Ground-clearance change is half the overall diameter difference because only the change in radius lifts or lowers the axle.

Understand speed and distance changes

A larger circumference covers more distance per wheel revolution. Nominal actual speed and distance therefore become higher than indicated when the replacement is larger.

A smaller circumference covers less distance per revolution, producing nominal actual speed and distance below the indicated values.

These calculations use the ratio between replacement and original nominal diameter. A physical road test or calibrated equipment is required for an exact real-world reading.

Verify the complete tire and wheel system

Confirm the approved rim-width range, load index, speed rating, wheel specifications, offset, inner clearance and fender clearance before purchasing.

Check clearance through full steering and suspension travel rather than judging only while the vehicle is parked.

TPMS, ABS, stability control and AWD systems may introduce additional requirements. Follow the vehicle and tire manufacturer guidance.

Compare the selected tire model’s published overall diameter and section width with the nominal calculator result. If the published measurements differ, use the manufacturer values when checking available space.

A wheel change can move the tire inward or outward even when the tire code stays the same. Review wheel width, offset, brake clearance and mounting specifications as one system rather than evaluating the tire by itself.

Avoid treating 3% as a fitment guarantee

A 3% diameter reference is useful for filtering geometry candidates, but it cannot verify rim approval, physical clearance, capacity or electronic-system requirements.

Do not substitute nominal dimensions for the measured specifications published for a specific tire model.

Compare several candidates, then confirm the chosen tire and wheel combination with authoritative manufacturer and vehicle information.

Worked example: 225/45R17 to 235/40R18

Nominal metric dimensions and an indicated speed of 60 mph.

The replacement is close in nominal diameter, but vehicle fitment still requires wheel, rating and clearance checks.

Questions before you start

Does a tire within 3% always fit?

No. Diameter is only one of several required fitment checks.

Why does the speedometer change?

A different circumference changes the distance travelled per wheel revolution.

Is the listed tire width exact?

No. It is nominal and measured width varies with the tire model and measuring rim.

Can a wider tire rub?

Yes. Both inner and outer clearance must be checked through steering and suspension travel.

Do P and LT sizes calculate differently?

The nominal geometry formula is the same, but service, construction and capacity requirements differ.
