Why measure real-world gas mileage?
A measured fuel-economy result helps with fuel budgets, vehicle comparisons and detecting changes over time. It reflects the route, load, weather and driving style actually experienced rather than a laboratory rating.
One tank can be unusual. Recording several normal full-tank intervals produces a more representative weighted average and makes trends easier to see.
Keep the purpose of the measurement in mind. A commuting average should include ordinary congestion and short trips, while a highway comparison should use similar routes and speeds. Comparing unlike journeys can make a healthy vehicle appear to have changed when the operating conditions are actually responsible.

Use the full-tank method
Fill the tank, reset the trip meter or record the odometer, drive normally, and refill to the same level. Record the distance and the amount added at the second fill.
Automatic pump shutoff and parking angle can change fill level. Using the same station and pump technique where practical reduces—but does not remove—this variation.
Do not use the fuel-tank gauge to estimate litres or gallons consumed. Dashboard bars are not calibrated measuring vessels, and their movement is rarely linear. The quantity printed on a full-refill receipt is the useful measurement for a tank-based calculation.
Calculate and convert fuel economy
US MPG is miles divided by US gallons. Imperial MPG uses the larger Imperial gallon. Kilometres per litre is kilometres divided by litres, while L/100 km is litres divided by kilometres multiplied by 100.
Higher MPG and km/L indicate better economy. Lower L/100 km indicates better economy. Keep gallon definitions explicit whenever converting.
A conversion should describe the same physical trip in another unit, not create a different result. If 30 US MPG is converted correctly, the distance and fuel consumption remain unchanged even though the displayed Imperial MPG number is larger.

Average multiple fill-ups correctly
For several intervals, add all distances and all fuel amounts, then divide total distance by total fuel. This weights every interval by its size.
Do not take the arithmetic mean of MPG values when the intervals have different fuel amounts or distances; that can produce a misleading result.
Include only complete intervals that begin and end at a comparable full level. A partial top-up can still be recorded, but combine it with the following refill before treating it as a complete tank interval. Note unusual towing, extended idling or predominantly city driving when reviewing trends.
Add cost and planning estimates
An entered pump price can estimate fuel cost for the measured interval and cost per mile or kilometre. Annual distance can project annual fuel use and cost at the measured economy.
Tank range and target-MPG savings are planning estimates. Keep a safe fuel reserve and do not treat a calculated maximum range as a refuelling recommendation.
For a useful annual plan, choose a distance that reflects current driving rather than an old national average. Fuel prices also change, so a projected annual cost is a scenario based on the entered price. Recalculate when travel patterns or prices materially change.
Understand normal variation
Traffic, short trips, cold starts, speed, terrain, weather, idling, load, tire pressure, maintenance and driving style can all affect mileage. Compare similar conditions when monitoring change.
Dashboard readings can use a different time window or fuel-flow estimate. A small difference from a tank calculation does not by itself indicate a fault.
Look for a sustained change across several measurements before drawing a conclusion. Confirm units and entries first, then consider seasonal conditions, route changes, tire pressure and maintenance. Seek qualified vehicle advice when a persistent deterioration is accompanied by warning lights, leaks, unusual exhaust or drivability problems.

300 miles travelled and 10 US gallons added at the next full refill.

300 ÷ 10 gives 30 MPG (US). The calculator converts the same measured distance and volume into each other unit without changing the underlying consumption.
