Transparent methodology

How the trip estimate is calculated

  1. 1. Complete the route distance

Import a basic route estimate or enter distance manually. Round trip doubles a one-way distance, while multi-stop combines every selected leg.

  2. 2. Estimate fuel

Distance, real-world efficiency and the matching price unit produce fuel required and fuel cost without mixing US and Imperial gallons.

  3. 3. Build the full budget

Stays, meals, tolls, parking, activities, local transport and other expenses remain separate so assumptions are easy to check.

  4. 4. Plan the share

The completed total is divided by travellers and days. Optional budget protection is applied to the visible subtotal.

Worked example

A 300-mile one-way trip at 30 MPG (US) and USD 3.60 per gallon costs USD 36 in fuel. Add each planned category, then divide the protected total by travellers.

Answers before you travel

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the total cost of a trip?

Add fuel, tolls, parking, accommodation, meals, local transport, activities and other expenses. This calculator also lets you add a percentage for unexpected price changes.

How is fuel cost calculated?

The calculator converts your distance and fuel-economy unit to litres used, converts the entered pump price to a price per litre, and multiplies the two values.

What is included in cost per person?

The complete estimated total, including the optional budget protection amount, is divided equally by the number of travellers.

How does round trip work?

Round trip doubles the entered one-way distance and its fuel use. Accommodation, meals, activities and other fixed trip expenses are not automatically doubled.

Can I calculate a multi-stop trip?

Yes. Route Assisted mode can search and combine up to eight route points, or Manual Trip mode can use a combined distance you enter yourself.

Does this calculator use live fuel prices or tolls?

No. Route Assisted mode provides basic route distance and duration, but it does not include live traffic, live fuel prices or automatic toll prices. Enter current costs from a source you trust.

Can I download or share my estimate?

Yes. After calculating, you can copy the summary, print a formatted report, download a PDF, or use your device share menu.
