Why add topsoil?
Topsoil can supply a growing layer where suitable surface soil is missing or insufficient. It is not a universal cure for poor drainage or an unsuitable site. Before importing material, identify the planting goal and the condition of the existing soil.
Utah State Extension defines natural topsoil as the surface A horizon and warns that materials sold under that name can vary. Texture, salts, pH, organic matter and coarse fragments affect usefulness. A dark color or a truckload described as screened does not establish all of those qualities.

Ask for evidence about the soil
Ask the supplier about origin, intended use, screening and available test information. A sample can help you discuss texture and debris, while appropriate testing provides information that appearance cannot. If the product is a blend, ask what is mixed into it and whether it suits the proposed planting.
A soil test can guide decisions about pH and nutrients rather than encouraging guesswork. Use a local testing service’s instructions for collecting a representative sample and interpreting results. A general nutrient test is not automatically a contamination assessment; suspected contamination needs appropriate specialist advice.

Measure the layer you actually intend to add
Record the surface area and the additional soil depth. The calculator accepts dimensions or known area, multiple geometric shapes and a quantity for identical sections. Break uneven terrain into manageable pieces rather than multiplying the deepest depression by the whole site.
For a rectangular raised bed, use the inside dimensions and only the depth to be filled with this material. Do not count an existing usable layer twice. The calculator does not choose a horticulturally suitable depth, specify a raised-bed blend or design grading and drainage near buildings.
Convert area and depth into volume
Area in square feet × depth in feet gives cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards. If you measure depth in inches, area × depth ÷ 324 gives cubic yards directly. In metric, area in square meters × depth in meters gives cubic meters.
The tool adds the selected allowance once. It can calculate whole bags from package volume and bulk orders from an optional supplier increment. No hidden settling or compaction factor is applied. Discuss any needed extra material with the supplier instead of treating an arbitrary percentage as a guarantee of the final level.
Volume is not weight
DailyUseCalc only shows topsoil weight when you enter supplier density. That is intentional: a universal conversion would hide differences in product and moisture. Required weight uses adjusted material volume, while ordered weight uses the bulk order after any increment rounding.
Compare bag volume and bulk volume on the same basis. The tool supports cubic feet or liters for bags and appropriate bulk units for the selected measurement system. Its material subtotal does not automatically add delivery, spreading, machinery, testing or tax. Confirm access and the tipping location before scheduling a load.
Do not let extra quantity substitute for soil quality
A larger load of unsuitable material can create more work, not a better planting area. Check the product before ordering the entire volume. Keep supplier information with your measurements so a repeat purchase can be compared meaningfully.
Do not count allowance again when rounding a bulk order. Those are separate steps: one adjusts the planned need; the other reflects how a supplier sells it. After placement, verify levels and planting conditions before purchasing more. This estimate cannot predict how the site or vegetation will respond.

Worked example: a rectangular planting area
10 ft × 6 ft, an illustrative 6-inch added layer, 0% allowance and 1 ft³ bags. No density or bulk increment entered.

60 × 0.5 = 30 ft³. The tool leaves weight unspecified without supplier density. If your supplier sells in 0.5 yd³ increments, the bulk order rounds to 1.5 yd³; that is purchasing surplus, not a change to the area.
Questions before you start
How much area does one cubic yard cover?
Divide 27 ft³ by depth in feet. At an illustrative 3 inches it covers 108 ft²; at 6 inches it covers 54 ft². These are geometric examples, not planting-depth recommendations.
How many tons are in a cubic yard of topsoil?
There is no fixed answer for every product and moisture condition. Ask for suitable density information and enter it in the calculator before using a weight-based estimate.
Is screened topsoil guaranteed to be good soil?
Screening describes removal of larger material, not a full assessment of pH, salts, nutrients or suitability. Ask for product information and appropriate testing.
Does the calculator include settling?
No automatic settling factor is included. Only your entered allowance changes the measured volume before bag or bulk purchasing rounding.
