Why use drywall?
Gypsum panels create interior wall and ceiling surfaces that can be finished and decorated. Different products serve different applications, so the quantity decision comes after the product and assembly decision. The same square footage does not make all panel types interchangeable.
Fire, sound and moisture performance depend on the specified assembly and installation, not just buying a thicker panel. National Gypsum distinguishes wet-area backers from products intended for other interior conditions. A sheet estimate cannot approve a shower lining or certify a fire-rated wall.

Choose panel dimensions that suit the job
Panel length and width determine area per sheet. Larger sheets may reduce some joints, but access, handling and the wall or ceiling layout matter too. Check whether the selected product is suitable for the framing and application before comparing sheet counts.
A panel count based only on total area does not describe where every cut and joint will fall. Sketch individual wall elevations and the ceiling, identify supports, and review the installation instructions. Use the calculator as a materials estimate alongside that layout, not instead of it.

Measure walls and ceilings separately
For a rectangular room, wall area is 2 × (length + width) × height. The ceiling adds length × width when included. The calculator also accepts a wall section or known total area. Quantity repeats identical rooms or sections.
Door and window counts are per item in this calculator and are multiplied by quantity. Other opening area is a project total. You can keep openings in the purchasing area or deduct them. Keeping them can provide a conservative area basis where cutouts do not translate directly into reusable full sheets; deducting assumes the reduction is appropriate for your plan.

Apply layers, waste and sheet rounding
The purchasing area is multiplied by the number of layers, then increased by the chosen waste percentage. Divide this required coverage by panel length × panel width and round upward to whole sheets. The order of those steps matters when comparing your own calculation with the result.
The tool estimates screws from purchased panels and the screws-per-panel value you enter. Compound and tape use the entered area coverage against layered purchasing area, before panel waste. These are adjustable estimating rates, not a prescribed screw pattern, joint measurement or finish specification.
Panels are only part of the materials list
Confirm panel type, size, quantity, delivery access and storage arrangements. For optional screws, enter both a suitable per-panel rate and box contents. For compound and tape, use compatible product coverage information or a verified project estimating rate.
Tape-roll length is not the same as square feet of wall coverage. If the label only gives length, do not enter that number as area. USG’s estimator also makes clear that material estimates depend on installation practices. Your actual joint layout and finishing level can change quantities. Corner bead, adhesives and other unentered accessories remain separate purchases.

Do not turn a sheet estimate into an assembly specification
Use the approved assembly for panel type, fastening, joint treatment and any required layers. Do not reduce a multi-layer system because a single layer appears to cover the area. Likewise, a moisture-resistant label does not automatically make a panel suitable for direct wet exposure.
When comparing estimates, check opening policy first: the same room can produce different sheet counts without either arithmetic being wrong. Record the policy, layers, panel size and waste beside the total. This makes the purchasing decision transparent to an installer or supplier.

Worked example: one room with its ceiling
12 ft × 10 ft × 8 ft high, ceiling included, openings kept in purchasing area, one layer, 4 × 8 ft panels and 10% waste.

519.2 ÷ 32 = 16.225, rounded upward to 17 sheets. The sheets provide 544 ft² of nominal coverage. That is an area-based estimate; a real panel layout can require a different order.
Questions before you start
Should I subtract doors and windows?
Choose the policy that matches your takeoff. Small openings do not always save whole sheets because of cuts and layout. The calculator makes this an explicit choice rather than silently assuming a deduction.
Does a 4 × 8 sheet cover 32 square feet?
Its nominal face area is 32 ft². Cuts, damaged pieces and the actual panel arrangement can reduce how efficiently that area covers the project.
Does it calculate an exact screw spacing?
No. Screws are estimated from an entered screws-per-panel rate. Use the specified assembly and manufacturer instructions for fastening requirements.
Can I enter a 250-foot tape roll as 250 square feet?
No. Linear length and area coverage are different units. Obtain a suitable area-coverage estimate or calculate tape separately from the joint layout.
